Side-Emitting LEDs Enable Space-Saving Illumination
Compact LEDs are integral to the user experience, enabling electronic products to communicate status, guide interactions, and deliver instant visual feedback. As manufacturers and end users seek ever-smaller, feature-rich devices, designers must integrate visual indicators, status displays, and user-interface elements without compromising space, power efficiency, or aesthetics.
ams OSRAM addresses these challenges with a family of LEDs that leverages advances in semiconductor LED design, packaging precision, and high-volume manufacturing processes, enabling reliable performance even at sub-millimeter scale.
The SMARTLED™ Pure 0201 (Figure 1) is a side-emitting LED with a footprint measuring just 0.6 mm x 0.3 mm in a 0201 chip scale package (CSP). It was designed to maximize optical efficiency and production consistency while meeting the need for intuitive, space-saving visual signaling in next-generation products.

Lighting components must provide reliable brightness and color performance while fitting into densely packed layouts. They must also minimize power consumption and support efficient manufacturing processes. Poorly controlled LEDs can create hotspots, uneven symbols, and visible bright points, compromising the user experience.
Wearables, smart home devices, medical portables, household appliances, and industrial controls can all benefit from indicators that occupy minimal space while remaining easily visible. However, reducing device size can make optical performance more challenging, requiring careful attention to light distribution, viewing angles, and visibility under varying ambient conditions.
Traditional indicator lighting often competes with batteries, sensors, and other critical components for board space. At the same time, tighter assembly tolerances make it more challenging to maintain consistent brightness and color across multiple LEDs.
Wide optical distribution
The SMARTLED Pure 0201's side-emitting architecture produces a batwing-shaped radiation pattern and a viewing angle up to 165°. This wide optical distribution helps spread light more evenly through thin light guides and across icons or edge indicators. Available brightness and wavelength groupings also help support a more consistent appearance in multi-LED interfaces.
The SMARTLED Pure 0201 devices are optimized for standard surface-mount assembly processes, supporting high-volume, automated placement with minimal design-in overhead. Their electrical characteristics are tuned for low-power operation typical of indicator applications, while their optical efficiency and viewing geometry make them suited for hidden or embedded UI elements.
Because side-emitting LEDs can be mounted flat on a PCB and coupled to light guides, diffusers, or edge-lit features, they enable extremely thin, visually seamless product designs. This makes it possible to integrate lighting deeper within a device, placing illumination exactly where it is needed, even when internal space is highly constrained.
For designers, this translates into greater freedom to implement dense, visually coherent interface schemes for a wide range of devices, including wearables, compact industrial controls, or consumer electronics.
The SMARTLED Pure 0201 family is designed for low-current operation, with electrical compatibility varying by the selected color variant and forward-voltage characteristics: red is around 1.8 – 2.2 V, while green is around 2.3 – 2.7 V, and blue/white are around 2.5 – 2.9 V.
In many designs, simple current-limited drive circuits may be sufficient, enabling direct or near-direct integration. Without the need for dedicated LED driver ICs, a reduced component count and simplified board design can be realized.
Designers can also create more expressive visual communication through clustered arrangements that mimic mini-LED effects for an improved user experience. Edge-lit icons and slim light guides can convey status without adding bulk or visual noise.
Conclusion
As products shrink while increasing in functionality, compact LEDs have emerged as crucial design elements. The SMARTLED Pure 0201 is available in multiple color and drive variants, enabling designers to match UI color requirements and system voltage conditions while maintaining a consistent ultra-compact 0201 form factor and optical architecture. By enabling both miniaturization and user-centric design, the SMARTLED Pure 0201 supports products that are smaller, more intuitive, and more visually refined.
