Shown here are four typical IoT product functions based on the type of use. IoT products for industrial use typically measure a machine or multiple machines. For example, how a piece of machinery is performing, the characteristics of the physical environment, and how the machinery needs to change when an event occurs, are normal functions for a machine. Industrial IoT devices commonly monitor machines remotely and measure various elements related to the purpose of that machine and also how well that machine is functioning in relation to the normal operation. On the other hand, consumer IoT applications can measure people’s conditions such as a blood pressure reading of an individual that is then sent to the doctor’s office for evaluation. It can also measure the location of a person at any given time to make sure that someone with Alzheimer’s, for example, is not wandering too far away from their place of residence. Next, the IoT product acts on control messages from remote servers that receive and analyze the data and direct that product to take a specific action. For example, if a car owner is locked out, he or she can use an application to send data to a remote server that processes the command and send a signal to the car application which activates the car function to unlock the door. Self-diagnostics is also an important function. For example, a defibrillator on an airplane will have an application that will periodically run a diagnostic check to make sure it is functioning correctly. The diagnostic check is performed remotely and when something is not working correctly, then a technician is dispatched to correct the issue. Another important function is to analyze the data: here data is being gathered, sent and received by a remote application, but it has to be analyzed by a business application and then appropriate action has to taken depending on what is occurring. For example, if a secured facility is broken into, the application takes an action such as sending an alert for someone to dispatch security to the facility.
